Originally updated almost weekly on the trail, it’s filled with experiences, challenges, and the unexpected trail magic that makes the AT so special. Whether you’re actively planning your own long-distance hiking adventure, dreaming of a future thru-hike, or simply curious about the Appalachian Trail, I hope my story inspires you. Get ready to discover the realities of a gear list tested, the kindness of strangers in Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New England, and ultimately Maine, and the transformative power of the trail.

From Dream to Reality: Preparing for an Epic Appalachian Trail Adventure 🔗

The journey began with a potent mix of excitement and the inevitable pre-hike jitters. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of home, we stepped onto the approach trail, ready to embrace the challenges and rewards that only a 2,190+ mile hike can offer.

Days 0-4: Georgia - The Southern Start 🔗

Our adventure began in the lush landscapes of Georgia, marked by a picturesque footbridge over a cascading waterfall. Almost immediately, we were introduced to the legendary generosity of the trail community. Trail angels from Franklin offered us brownies and soda. While we politely declined the treat (later humorously dubbed the “brownies of death” by a fellow hiker!), we enjoyed a warm chat. We learned that Lucky Moon was paying it forward with trail magic while meticulously planning her own Appalachian Trail thru-hike for the following year. This early encounter solidified the spirit of the AT!

Days 5-8: Boiled Peanuts - A Taste of Southern Hospitality 🔗

We quickly immersed ourselves in the unique and welcoming culture of the AT, which included sampling local delicacies like boiled peanuts – a true Southern treat! The unexpected kindness of strangers and the strong sense of shared camaraderie among hikers became defining and cherished characteristics of our Appalachian Trail thru-hike experience.

Days 9-12: Sticks and Ranger - Earning Our Trail Names 🔗

Trail names, those unique nicknames adopted by hikers on the AT, are an integral part of the trail culture. It was during these days that we officially became known as Sticks and Ranger, names that seemed to perfectly reflect our individual personalities and experiences unfolding on the trail.

Days 13-16: Cowboy Camping - Sleeping Under a Blanket of Stars 🔗

One of the most unforgettable and awe-inspiring experiences during our Appalachian Trail thru-hike was undoubtedly cowboy camping – choosing to sleep directly under the vast expanse of the night sky, without the protection of a tent. The sheer immensity of the starry heavens and the symphony of sounds emanating from the surrounding forest created a profound sense of connection with the natural world. The Great Smoky Mountains: An Early Test of Resilience The majestic Great Smoky Mountains presented a new set of challenges that tested our physical and mental fortitude. Steep and relentless climbs, rapidly changing and often unpredictable weather patterns, and the ever-present need for vigilance regarding bear safety pushed us to our limits.

Days 17-21: Great Smoky Mountains - Beauty Tempered with Challenges 🔗

The Great Smoky Mountains truly tested our endurance with their seemingly endless steep climbs and highly unpredictable weather. We were absolutely amazed by Smoky, a fellow hiker we encountered running a grueling 34-mile section in the pouring rain! Her infectious energy and unwavering positivity served as a major source of inspiration for us. Finding Our Stride: Virginia and Beyond on the Appalachian Trail As we continued our journey northward, we gradually found our stride, both literally and figuratively. We developed a deeper and more profound appreciation for the breathtaking beauty and inherent challenges that the Appalachian Trail constantly presented.

Days 22-26: Ranger - Trail Life and Moments of Reflection 🔗

We continued to encounter incredible individuals from all walks of life and experience countless moments of unexpected beauty and wonder. The inherent simplicity of trail life allowed for deeper self-reflection, fostering a greater appreciation for the present moment and a renewed sense of gratitude.

Days 27-33: Hemlock Tree Campsite - Discovering Moments of Serenity 🔗

We discovered pockets of profound serenity amidst the rugged wilderness, finding solace in the quiet beauty of places like the Hemlock Tree Campsite. The gentle rustling of wind through the towering trees and the soothing sounds of a nearby stream created an atmosphere of unparalleled peace and tranquility.

Days 34-41: Battling a Cold Snap - Weathering Nature’s Fury 🔗

We faced an unexpected and intense cold snap that severely tested the limits of our gear and our personal resolve. We were incredibly grateful for our warm sleeping bags and the unwavering support and encouragement we received from our fellow hikers.

Days 42-48: Virginia is for (Alpaca) Lovers - Unexpected Wildlife Encounters 🔗

During our time in Virginia, we had the delightful surprise of encountering a herd of alpacas grazing near the trail! Virginia proved to be a welcome change of scenery and a refreshing experience after traversing through Tennessee, which, in comparison, offered relatively minimal trail resources and support.

Day 56: Doc Pepa and the Gift of Trail Magic 🔗

Doc Pepa, the owner of Angels Rest Hiker Hostel, generously picked us up directly from the trail. We were fortunate enough to secure a room inside the house, which included access to a fully equipped kitchen – a major luxury on the trail! After a satisfying dinner, we embarked on a crucial resupply run at the local Food Lion and Walgreens, then returned to the hostel to carefully repackage our food in preparation for our upcoming trek to Daleville.

Pennsylvania: Navigating Rocksylvania and Embracing Trail Angels 🔗

Pennsylvania, affectionately nicknamed “Rocksylvania” due to its notoriously rocky terrain, lived up to its reputation as a physically demanding section of the Appalachian Trail. However, the boundless kindness of trail angels and the unwavering support of the incredibly strong trail community helped us persevere through even the most challenging stretches.

Day 92: Duncannon - A Haven for Thru-Hikers 🔗

We departed from the shelter around 7:30 am and hiked the remaining 3.5 miles into the town of Duncannon. Duncannon immediately distinguished itself as one of the most welcoming and hiker-friendly towns we had encountered thus far on our Appalachian Trail thru-hike.

Day 99: Will’s Unexpected Kindness in Bethlehem 🔗

Will generously picked us up in the evening and drove us approximately 25 minutes into the charming town of Bethlehem. Upon arrival, Will proceeded to order nearly every appetizer on the menu, and we joyfully gorged ourselves on the incredible food and drinks. We spent the evening sharing stories about our experiences on the trail and getting to know Will on a more personal level. New England: Entering the Final Stretch of the Appalachian Trail The final leg of our Appalachian Trail thru-hike led us through the rugged and challenging terrain of New England, encompassing the majestic White Mountains of New Hampshire and the remote and unforgiving 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine.

Day 107: Waterfalls and Rock Stairs - A Glimpse of Northern Beauty 🔗

We embarked on our day with an early 7:15 am start, which involved a steep ascent up a series of rock stairs alongside a breathtaking cascading waterfall. Conquering the 100-Mile Wilderness Immediately upon entering the legendary 100-Mile Wilderness, we encountered a prominent sign cautioning hikers about the difficulty of this notoriously remote section. The sign strongly suggested that hikers should carry “a minimum of 10 days supplies” with them. This gave us a good laugh, considering we had precisely 5 and a half days of food packed in our bags!

Day 135: Glendale and the High-Volume Hiker Hostels 🔗

The early morning brought more rain, delaying our departure from camp until 9 am after the downpour subsided. We hiked on and off throughout the day with Killer and Wizard, two fellow thru-hikers, and eventually reached the road crossing for Glendale around noon. From there, we took a short road walk to Hikers Welcome hostel, a popular spot for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers.

Katahdin: Reaching the Northern Terminus and Reflecting on the Journey 🔗

Reaching the summit of Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, was an incredibly emotional and deeply triumphant moment. After months of unwavering hard work, dedication, and perseverance, we had finally accomplished our ambitious goal of completing a thru-hike of the entire AT.

The Descent and a Joyful Reunion 🔗

Despite the inherent challenges of navigating the Knife’s Edge, a particularly precarious section of the trail, we both wholeheartedly agreed that completing the Appalachian Trail left us feeling as though a significant weight had been lifted from our shoulders. We couldn’t help but laugh at the newfound sense of carefree lightness we experienced during the remainder of our hike, knowing that a warm shower and a comfortable bed awaited us at the end. I playfully asked Ranger, “Is this what dayhikers feel like?!”

The End of the Trail: A Time for Rest and Recovery 🔗

We carefully packed all of our hiking gear into a large trash bag to prevent any lingering odors from permeating the car and embarked on a 90-minute drive back to Katahdin Streams Campground, where we retrieved the remaining gear we had stored in the lean-to near the Ranger Station. Ranger’s incredibly thoughtful parents greeted us with a car full of snacks for the journey, and his mom had even designed custom travel mugs to commemorate our Appalachian Trail thru-hikes! On our way through Bangor, Maine, we stopped at a ramen bar for dinner and couldn’t help but laugh when we realized we had unintentionally chosen a gourmet version of trail food for our first meal off the trail. It felt wonderful to be reunited with family, and we eagerly anticipated a period of much-needed rest and recovery in the coming weeks. Thank you for following along on our incredible adventure!
